What “700 (gwiyeowo)” really means.
It looks like a number. It reads like a compliment.
700 looks like a number and works like a word. Squint at it and the shapes line up with three Korean letters — ㄱ becomes 7, and each ㅇ becomes 0. Those three letters happen to be the first consonants of 귀여워 (gwiyeowo), “cute.” Type 700 in a chat, and that's exactly what you just said.
It's a typing shorthand, built for places where you have to react to something cute faster than you can type it out — game chats, livestream chat windows, comments on X and Instagram. There's no famous origin moment behind it. It just settled in the places where speed matters. And it's read as 귀여워 (gwiyeowo) — not as “seven hundred,” and not one digit at a time.
Faster than typing “cute”
The clearest use is the plainest one: something adorable shows up, and 700 goes exactly where 귀여워 would go.
A SLEEPING DOG PHOTO
친구: (강아지 자는 사진) 얘 완전 곯아떨어졌어.
chingu: (gangaji janeun sajin) yae wanjeon goratteoreojyeosseo.
나: 아 우리 집 강아지 자는 모습 완전 700 ㅠㅠ
na: a uri jip gangaji janeun moseup wanjeon gwiyeowo ㅠㅠ
“(a sleeping dog photo) He's totally passed out.” — “Ugh, my dog sleeping like this is just so cute.”
Same slot in the sentence, same feeling, three fewer keystrokes. The ㅠㅠ after it is the crying-face emoticon — the “I can't handle how cute this is” of texting.
The fandom reflex
It shows up most where things scroll by fast — a livestream chat, a comment section under a favorite idol's post. 최애 (choeae) means your favorite member — your “bias” — and when they do something adorable on air, this is the reflex.
YOUR BIAS'S BROADCAST
친구: 최애 오늘 방송 봤어?
chingu: choeae oneul bangsong bwasseo?
나: 진짜 700....
na: jinjja gwiyeowo....
“Did you catch my bias's broadcast today?” — “Seriously, so cute....”
The trailing dots do the rest: this isn't a review, it's someone still smiling at the screen.
It takes intensifiers, just like the word does
Because 700 stands in for a real word, it behaves like one. It can be “totally” 700, or “seriously” 700 — the same way 귀여워 can.
A RANDOM DOLL PHOTO
친구: (인형 사진 보내며) 이거 대박이지 않아?
chingu: (inhyeong sajin bonaemyeo) igeo daebagiji ana?
나: 이 인형 뭐야? 완전 700!
na: i inhyeong mwoya? wanjeon gwiyeowo!
“(sending a doll photo) Isn't this amazing?” — “What is this doll? So cute!”
완전 (wanjeon) (“totally”) and 진짜 (jinjja) (“really”) attach to it exactly as they would to any adjective. The exclamation mark adds the volume.
One catch: 700 is purely a typing habit. Use it with someone who doesn't know the code and it's just a number. But once you've seen it, you'll spot it everywhere — three keystrokes, one small compliment.
