What “오늘 내가 쏠게 (oneul naega ssolge)” really means.

Before the bill even arrives, someone already claims it.

오늘 내가 쏠게 (oneul naega ssolge) literally reads: "today, I'll shoot." 쏘다 (ssoda) means "to shoot," and in slang it means paying for everyone — fast, no discussion, no splitting the check. This sentence just declares who that is today.

The image tracks: a bullet leaves the gun before anyone can argue with it. Someone says 오늘 내가 쏠게 and the bill is already handled before it's even landed on the table.

Marking an occasion

The most common trigger is good news — a reason to be the one treating everyone.

CELEBRATING GOOD NEWS WITH FRIENDS

chingu: neo ibeone seungjinhaetdamyeo? chukahae!
“I heard you got promoted? Congrats!” — “Thanks — it's on me today. Order whatever you want.”

Beating someone else to it

It also shows up as a small competition — over who gets to pay, not who has to.

REACHING FOR THE BILL BEFORE ANYONE ELSE CAN

chingu: gyesaneun naega halge, jinanbeone eodeomeogeotjana.
“Let me get this, you paid last time.” — “No, it's on me today. You can get it next time.”

Koree note: The back-and-forth over who pays isn't awkward here — it's the whole point. Declaring 오늘 내가 쏠게 first is how you win it.

A milestone worth marking

And sometimes it's not about beating anyone — just about a moment big enough to deserve treating people.

TREATING EVERYONE WITH YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK

chingu: ibeon dare cheot wolgeup badatdago haetji?
na: eo! geuraeseo oneul naega ssolge, dadeul pyeonhage sikyeo.
“You said you got your first paycheck this month, right?” — “Yeah! So it's on me today — everyone order whatever you like.”

So when someone says 오늘 내가 쏠게, don't reach for your wallet — and don't read it as just about money either. It's less about the bill than about who gets to be the reason everyone's happy tonight.
